Many slaves fled into the swamp and were never seen again. Later it was found that communities formed on the islands above the muck of the swamp where they lived harsh yet free lives for decades. They robbed nearby farms for livestock and grain and fled back into the swamp once again. Many indentured whites fled into the swamp to get away from the servitude and joined the communities looking for a better life.
